Writer, filmmaker, anthropologist. Chair, Rift Valley Institute, research and training organization working with communities in the African Rift Valley region. Anthropology and Africa editor, Times Literary Supplement; editorial board member, African Affairs; contributor to journals and magazines including New York Review of Books, The Guardian, Granta.
