Biography:
Photography critic for the Village Voice since 1987; columnist for Modern Painters (London) and Photograph. Contributor, Aperture, Art Review, and Artforum. Featured writer, The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century (2001). Former art editor, Village Voice (1994–2005). Former rock critic, Rolling Stone, and columnist, Creem, Crawdaddy, Fusion, and Record World. Cocurator, Settings & Players: Theatrical Ambiguity in American Photography (2000), White Cube 2 Gallery, London; organizer, exhibition of Steven Klein’s fashion work at the Musée de l’Élysée, Lausanne, Switzerland. Curator, Male (1998), Female (1999), Wessel + O’Connor Gallery, New York.
