Honorary Degrees
In 1865 the Rev. Thomas A. Pynchon received the first honorary degree conferred by St. Stephen’s College, as Bard was then known. From that time until 1944, when Bard severed its relationship with Columbia University and became an independent liberal arts college, it awarded more than 150 honorary degrees.
