Research and teaching in Brazil and Liberia. Publications include Umbanda: Religion and Politics in Urban Brazil and articles and reviews in Black Brazil: Culture, Identity and Social Mobilization; The State of Siege: Global Process, Identity and Violence; American Anthropologist; American Ethnologist; Luso-Brazilian Review; Religião e Sociedade; Liberian Studies Journal; Journal of Latin American Anthropology; Medical Anthropology; and Medical Anthropology Quarterly.
