Doaa Atamna
Visiting Instructor in Arabic
Doaa Atamna is an emerging scholar and philologist in the field of classical Arabic poetry from the University of California, Berkeley. Her forthcoming dissertation, titled “Why are you Weeping?” The Poetics of Voice in the Classical Arabic Elegiac Tradition, examines elegiac modes of composition in classical Arabic poetry, engaging lyric and genre theories, gender and orality studies, and critical theory. At Berkeley, she designed and taught courses in the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of JAGNES: The Journal of Associated Graduates in Near Eastern Studies. Her areas of interest are the pre-Islamic and early Islamic female-authored elegy, the Umayyad ghazal, Sufi poetry, and the city elegy, or rithāʾ al-mudun. Doaa’s poems have appeared in فم | Rusted Radishes, among other literary journals.
