Dean of the College Presents
AI and Reading: Lessons from Mickey Mouse and John Adams
Bard Reading Initiative Event
Friday, April 17, 2026
Reem-Kayden Center Laszlo Z. Bito '60 Auditorium
11:30 am – 12:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
11:30 am – 12:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
Naomi S. Baron, Professor Emerita of Linguistics
at American University
As a technology, modern AI is at once
frighteningly productive (enter Mickey) and a
genuine threat to our brains, not to mention to
democracy (enter Adams). These challenges loom
large when we turn to AI to do our reading for us.
Don’t look to Big Tech to worry about the
problem. The responsibility is upon us to
understand what’s at stake and to forge strategies
for protecting the place of human reading in
our individual and communal lives.
Naomi S. Baron is Professor Emerita of Linguistics
at American University. Her most recent book
Reader Bot: What Happens When AI Reads and
Why It Matters (Stanford University Press) will be
on sale during the event.
Closing reception to
follow in the RKC lobby
