Baika Music Workshop

The melodies and texts of the ancient Buddhist music called Baika express the simplicity, depth, and ineffability at the heart of all human experience. Baika is practiced in Japan by Zen Buddhists and is rarely heard outside that context. While the roots of Baika are in the Buddhist teachings and ceremonies of India, China, and Tibet, the music and the wisdom of the words have universal resonance. In this introductory workshop, we will access our innate capacity to forget the self and enter a joyful and poignant collective space together. We will primarily practice the vocal music, but you will also be introduced to the accompanying bells and chimes.
All are welcome, and no prior music experience is necessary!

Esho Shugetsu Sudan is a Zen Buddhist priest and resident Baika teacher of Toshoji, a Soto Zen International Training Monastery for monks and nuns in Okayama, central Japan. Originally from Australia, she is the only non-Japanese person to hold the level of sankyu shihan in Baika.
