Annandale Corridor Pathlight Project Summary
August 5, 2020In early spring 2020, Bard completed improvements to the sidewalk lighting along the Annandale Road corridor, from Woods Road to Cruger Island Road.
Seventeen new pathlight poles were added along the sidewalk, complimenting the existing 12 poles, which were simultaneously upgraded for a total of 29 pathlights. This provided a contiguous corridor with a light source every 50 to 60 feet.
Highlights of the new design include:
- A new, taller, 12-foot pole was selected, with an arm and fixture that overhangs the sidewalk—this was done in order to improve the light footprint and connectivity between poles, and also to reduce glare for pedestrians and nearby vehicle traffic. In contrast, the existing poles were shorter, with no arm, and with a decorative, but antiquated, “globe” fixture that indirectly sent light in 360 degrees.
- A new “Dark Skies” compliant fixture was selected in order to direct light downward (where needed), while reducing outward glare and eliminating light “trespass” and “waste” upward into the tree canopy and beyond.
- A new 18-watt LED bulb was selected to improve the quantity and quality of light, while also achieving energy savings.
- New poles were strategically placed to provide more light at critical locations, such as crosswalks, driveways, and emergency telephones.
Bard College Safety and Security Overview
Bard College provides round-the-clock, year-round safety and security coverage. The Office of Safety and Security consists of a director, assistant director, two security shift supervisors, and 25 full-time and part-time employees. All safety and security officers are highly trained, registered New York State–certified security personnel. Their main mission is to be a positive presence on campus and thus encourage the Bard community and its many visitors to follow the rules and guidelines established by the College. A professional dispatching staff coordinates all security communications. Should a difficult situation arise on campus that requires a higher level of public authority, the Office of Safety and Security maintains close working relations with the Red Hook Police Department, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department, and New York State Police.Other campus safety measures include an all-terrain vehicle patrol and bike patrol. A student-operated team of trained emergency medical technicians is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while school is in session.
Although Bard College is situated in a rural, almost idyllic setting, crimes sometimes occur on campus that require the attention of Bard’s security force and the police. The College publishes annually a list of crimes that occurred during the previous year and categorizes them according to standards established by the U.S. Department of Education.
