Electric Japan: A Screening of Michinoku Power

Where does electricity come from? Michinoku Power is a documentary that lays bare the energy crisis in Japan’s Northeast after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, following Gen Z environmental activist Koichiro Shigihara along his exploration of the local landscape of energy production. Shigihara meets experts and residents at various sites across Miyagi Prefecture including a coal-fired power plant, a palm oil power station marketed as “clean” despite worsening climate change, and a mega solar project that places undue burdens on the local community—all built in the wake of the 2011 catastrophe. As his perspective broadens globally, Shigihara joins activists from the Global South to protest overseas fossil fuel projects and takes steps toward building truly sustainable local communities through hands-on action. A US premiere followed by a Q&A with film director Yu Iwasaki and Koichiro Shigihara himself.
