Physics Program Presents
Summer Research Talks!
Friday, September 12, 2025
Brody Lab - Hegeman 107
12:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
Join us for a talk by Fonsea Bagchi and Belen Gutierrez, who developed computational methods to characterize defects in optical coatings used in precision instruments like LIGO gravitational wave detectors. Using SMUTHI electromagnetic scattering simulations, their research modeled how individual defects of varying size, shape, and position within coating layers scatter light. Their work demonstrates that defect position within the coating significantly affects scattering signatures, and provides a framework for improving coating quality assessment in gravitational wave detectors.12:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
