Monday, April 6, 2026
Olin Humanities, Room 201
5:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
In the past few decades, and especially since the March 2011 Fukushima Disaster, an interest in the role of women, followed by a set of policies referred to as “Womenomics,” has emerged within Japanese society and political discourse. Through the analysis of two dystopian novels appeared in 2016 – Kubo Misumi’s Akagami (“Red Slip”) and Koyata Natsuki’s Rirīsu (“Release,”), both currently unavailable in English– this presentation will explore the inchoate anxieties of politicians, intellectuals and the everyman regarding such role, and the way in which they shape the post-disaster future imagined by women writers of dystopian and science fiction.5:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
