Psychology Program Presents
Looking the Part: Examining the “Physical Femininity Imperative” from the Perceiver and Target Perspective
A talk by Natalie Wittlin, Psychology Program
Thursday, April 16, 2026
Preston Theater
4:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
Physical appearances have been theorized as central to conceptualizations of womanhood. Thus, when women do not conform to norms of physical femininity, they may be excluded from the category of woman. Further, they may experience a sense of threat to their identity or knowledge of self. This talk will present two lines of work examining the physical femininity imperative from both the perceiver and target perspective. Wittlin will present new work exploring how the gendered appearance of female athletes influences judgements about whether they should be permitted to participate in women’s sports. This talk aims to demonstrate the important role that gendered expectations within an often-neglected domain—physical appearance—play in shaping women’s psychological experiences and access to opportunities.4:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
