Asharshylyq (the 1930s Famine in Kazakhstan) was one of the most terrifying events in the history of Kazakh people. It took place during the mass collectivization of the then-pastoral nomadic population, which, around that time, had little to no experience in agriculture. Alua Samat, Bard undergraduate speaker from Kazakhstan, will screen rare documentary photographs and cite little-known historical material to address and explicate this tragic experience.5:00 pm – 6:30 pm EST/GMT-5
