Translating Climate Change: Beyond Disbelief and Dystopia
Professor Eban Goodstein (Bard Center for Environmental Policy)

Bertelsmann Campus Center, Multipurpose Room
9:00 am – 10:30 am EDT/GMT-4
Following yet another summer of record-breaking global temperatures, climate change science still translates quite differently to different groups of people within the politically polarized environment of the United States. Climate change disbelief (or a belief that scientific predictions of climate change are wildly exaggerated) is common on the right. At the same time, a subset of Americans believes that it is too late to take action to slow climate change, and that we face an inevitable and near-term global climate apocalypse. As a result of this polarization, climate scientists and policy-makers have spent a lot of time working on ‘climate communication’, or the translation of climate science and solution strategies into language that can move people into productive conversation about ways forward. This presentation will introduce useful metaphors like ""climate repair"", and enable you to have more effective talks about stabilizing the climate with both your climate-denying uncle at Thanksgiving, as well as your climate-depressed roommate next week. 9:00 am – 10:30 am EDT/GMT-4
