How can students and colleges translate thoughts into action when authoritarians in the United States and abroad threaten basic democratic rights? This talk will focus on voting rights, which are increasingly challenged across the country. It will address strategies and tactics from Bard's quarter-century-long struggle over student voting, which saw victories in four major lawsuits and resulted in a change in New York State law to make voting easier for students across the state, and incorporate lessons from activism across the country, including the experience of Bard's partners in a Mellon Foundation supported project (and joint course) on student voting from three Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tuskegee, Prairie View A & M and North Carolina A & T. It will more broadly address challenges to voting rights that are felt across the United States, and strategies to thwart them. What lessons do we take from these fights for other rights that are under threat, be they related to education, gender identity or race?11:00 am – 12:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
