Two Ways of Becoming Modern:
Glikl of Hameln & Solomon Maimon
Abraham Socher
Monday, April 4, 2022
Reem-Kayden Center, Room 115
11:50 am – 1:10 pm EDT/GMT-4
Glikl’s memoirs and Solomon Maimon’s autobiography are the two great ego-documents of the long Jewish 18th century, the first works by Jews to invent themselves as recognizably modern subjects. Their differences (including but not only that of gender) reveal crucial aspects of early Jewish modernity.11:50 am – 1:10 pm EDT/GMT-4
Abraham Socher is the editor of the Jewish Review of Books, which he founded in 2010. He taught and chaired Jewish Studies at Oberlin College for 18 years. The edition of Solomon Maimon’s Autobiography (Princeton University Press) which he coedited, annotated, and introduced was a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award in 2020. His most recent book is Liberal and Illiberal Arts: Essays (Mostly Jewish).
