Women in Armed Conflict Panel Discussion

Monday, December 12, 2022
Online Event
8:30 am – 10:00 am EST/GMT-5
8:30 AM New York l 2:30 PM Vienna

In honor of Human Rights Day 2022, the OSUN Gender Equity Working Group invites community members to a webinar with experts from the Ukrainian, Afghan, Palestinian and Iranian contexts discussing the connection between war, conflict and gender.

According to the UN's Office of the High Commission for Human Rights, war and conflict can result in intensifing pre-existing gender inequalities while increasing gender-based violence against women and girls, including arbitrary killings, torture, sexual violence and forced marriage.  Despite the disporporate impacts, women are often left out of the peace process and their work in that process is often largely invisible.  Our panelists will raise critical questions related to the role gender plays in conflict, war, violence, the peace process and the post-conflict context.

Panelists:
Tamara Martsenyuk, Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy
Sweeta Akbari, Founder and CEO of Afghan Women Scholars (AWS)

Moderator:
Zarlasht Sarmast, Program Coordinator, OSUN Global Engagement Fellows program; Director and CEO of the project Afghanistan Politics on the Verge of Transformation

In addition to the December panel, the OSUN Gender Equity Working Group is planning a series of online events during March, Women's History Month, that are designed with the intent of raising the profile of gender-oriented issues and topics.
