Bard Early College is pleased to announce Youth Suffrage and the Democratic Process, an event series taking place this October. The series draws together students and colleagues across the BEC and larger Bard network for dialogue on the theme of youth suffrage and the shifting role of young people in America's democratic process. 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
The age at which a person is first allowed to vote differs across the world. In America, that age has shifted from 21 to 18, and a long-standing movement has been working to lower the age again. This movement has seen both noteworthy successes and failures, and it reflects social attitudes, hopes, and anxieties towards young people. This series brings in scholars, activists, and other experts on this issue and on the larger context of enfranchisement in our system of elections, to foster dialogue and debate on the question of the voting age in America.

Andrew Wilkes
Andrew Wilkes serves as Generation Citizen’s Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy, where he leads GC’s thought leadership, coalition building, and policy initiatives as a part of the national leadership team. Andrew comes to this role with nearly ten years of experience in public policy, advocacy, and community organizing, particularly among congregations and community-based organizations. Prior to joining GC in 2017, he served as the executive director of the Drum Major Institute, a social change organization founded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In that capacity, he executed public affairs events in Dallas, TX and Washington D.C. to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act; established the Beloved Community Initiative, a national resource on spirituality and social justice for faith communities; and relaunched the nationally renowned Marketplace of Ideas Forum – a forum for bringing policy ideas to an audience of changemakers, policy professionals, and nonprofit leaders.
Andrew is a graduate of Hampton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, the CORO public affairs fellowship, and is a doctoral candidate in political science at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He also serves on the board of directors for the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State and Habitat for Humanity – New York State.

Aditi Dinakar
Aditi Dinakar is the Legislative Correspondent for Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY-06). She manages the constituent correspondence program and handles voting rights, campaign finance, and LGBTQ+ issues for the Congresswoman. She previously worked at End Citizens United and interned for Planned Parenthood. Aditi graduated summa cum laude from Creighton University in 2018 with a degree in Economics and a minor in Public Policy.
Arianna Nassiri
Arianna Nassiri is a freshman at Georgetown University, but was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. She is the leader of the Vote16SF campaign, which has successfully placed a ballot measure on the 2020 ballot. She served as a City Commissioner for three years, and in that time she received numerous honors from Mayor London Breed and Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Brandon Klugman
Brandon is the Vote16USA Campaign Manager at Generation Citizen. In this role, he leads the initiative to lower the voting age, including supporting youth-led campaigns, publishing resources for advocates, and leading a Youth Advisory Board made up of activists from around the country. He also contributes to the organization’s work to advance Action Civics education through state level policy nationwide. He is inspired every day by young people working to strengthen their democracy.
