Bard Prepares for Relocation of Simon’s Rock, Reports WAMC
As the transition begins for Simon’s Rock to relocate from Great Barrington, MA, to Bard College’s Annandale-on-Hudson campus in NY, WAMC spoke with several faculty members about the process ahead of the early college’s new opening in the fall. “I suspect we’ll see an increase in the day student population in the Hudson Valley. The Berkshires has had kind of a decline in school-age students in the population,” John Weinstein, provost and vice president of Simon’s Rock, told WAMC. “So certainly I will encourage Hudson Valley families to get to know us—because even though we do draw in [students] from across the country and around the world, there is a day student option that might interest people.” Construction is still underway to get Bard’s Massena campus, a former seminary acquired in 2023, ready for the transition, and the 260-acre location will maintain a separate feel from Bard, despite its proximity to the main campus, for the early college students. Founded in 1966, Simon’s Rock allows students to begin college after 10th or 11th grade; the Academy was launched in 2015 to prepare 9th and 10th grade students to enter the Early College program.
