Bard Welcomes Over 50 International Students to Campus

As the Fall semester begins, Bard College welcomes more than 50 international students to its campuses and community. Thirty-seven international transfer students are coming from countries including Bangladesh, Cyprus, Cameroon, and Mexico. Also joining Bard this year are nine transfer students and 18 exchange students, from schools including the American University of Cairo and Fulbright University Vietnam. International student exchange is a key part of Bard’s educational and social foundation, enriching classroom and campus life with perspectives, cultures, languages, experiences, and ideas that would otherwise not be present. Every year, eight foreign language tutors help to facilitate the Bard language program. Additionally this year, 46 outgoing Bard Exchange students are participating in programs such as Bard NYC and Bard College Berlin, and studying in places as distant as Australia and Senegal.
Clearing the way for these students required close coordination among the Institute for International Liberal Education (IILE), the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (OISSS), and Bard Abroad, as well as with international counterparts, to arrange travel to campus, assist with immigration and orientation needs, and help students navigate the many challenging transitions inherent to studying in a new country. “Welcoming international students is a community effort,” says Chrys Margaritidis, dean of international initiatives at Bard. “Thank you to everyone across campus who helps make our college a welcoming and inclusive home for students from around the world.”
The Institute for International Liberal Education works across a range of programs to advance the theory and practice of international liberal arts education, in part by facilitating dynamic relationships with international students and institutions. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services provides individual assistance to international students, faculty, and their families through advisement concerning federal immigration laws, tax and labor relations, and support related to personal, academic, professional, and cultural matters. Bard Abroad provides groundbreaking study abroad programs, fostering international undergraduate educational partnerships in regions undergoing rapid political and economic transformation.
