A keynote for the 17th annual Hannah Arendt Center conference
TEJU COLE is a novelist, essayist, and photographer. His books include the novels Open City and Tremor, the novella Every Day is for the Thief, the essay collections Known and Strange Things and Black Paper, and a number of projects that set photographs alongside texts. He has been honored with the PEN/Hemingway Award, the Internationaler Literaturpreis, the Anisfield-Wolf Award, and the Windham-Campbell Prize, among others. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was Distinguished Writer in Residence at Bard College from 2012 to 2015. He delivered the 2024 Clarendon Lectures at the University of Oxford. Teju Cole is currently Gore Vidal Professor of the Practice of Creative Writing at Harvard.Learn more at hac.bard.edu/joy-2025.
