Jonathan Becker, vice president for academic affairs and director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Bard College, contributed an opinion piece to WAMC in which he emphasizes the importance of recognizing Bard’s identity as an institution with vast reach in the global education landscape. He writes that the College’s institutional mission is to expand access to liberal arts and sciences education to communities where such education has been underdeveloped or absent, highlighting examples such as the Al-Quds Bard College of Arts and Sciences, the Bard Early College network, and the Bard Prison Initiative, to name but a few. “Who are the students we impact? Put simply, they are a combination of those who could come to us, and those—because traditional higher education was out of reach in their lives—to whom we brought the college,” Becker writes. “This ecosystem is glued together by thousands of dedicated, engaged, and talented faculty, students, staff and administrators spread across the globe.”
