Mariel Fiori ’05 Interviewed About La Voz by the Reher Center
Mariel Fiori ’05, managing editor and founder of La Voz, was interviewed about the magazine by the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History, a history museum in Kingston, New York. Founded in 2004, La Voz is a free monthly publication that covers relevant Hudson Valley news in Spanish. It was launched by Fiori as a student project along with alumna Emily Schmall ’05, and has grown to a distribution of 6,000 copies in five locations. Fiori also hosts La Voz con Mariel Fiori, a show on Radio Kingston.
Even in its early days, “responses revealed that La Voz could be more than a newsletter, it could be a point of connection,” writes the Reher Center. “Through La Voz, Mariel works to tell [a] story that includes local artists, community leaders, cultural traditions, working families, and people making meaningful contributions to the region.” Fiori says the newsletter’s mission—to serve those who have recently arrived in the US and need help navigating an unknown system—hasn’t changed. “We call this country the country of opportunities, but if the opportunities pass by your side because you don't know about them, then they are not opportunities.”
