Bard Theater Presents the Play Terrorism from March 4 to 8

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Bard Theater presents Terrorism, by The Presnyakov Brothers, from March 4 through March 8, in LUMA Theater of the Fisher Center. Directed by Dmitry Troyanovsky, Terrorism—written before 9/11 by a Siberian playwriting team (Oleg, 35 and Vladimir, 31)—presciently captures the jittery, fearful post–9/11 mindset. In the play’s six interconnected scenes, all the characters are on edge, feeling threatened by one thing or another. Performances on March 4, 5, and 6 are at 7:00 p.m.; on March 7 and 8 at 8:00 p.m.; with a matinee on March 8 at 3:00 p.m. There is live music in the lobby for a half hour before each showtime. Tickets are $15; free for Bard students, faculty, and staff. (Note: Adult content may make this production inappropriate for children under 13.) The authors, the Presnyakov Brothers, are professors, playwrights, and novelists. Terrorism premiered at the Moscow Arts Theatre in November 2002 and was later presented at London’s Royal Court and by the New Group in New York City. But the extraordinary thing about this deft and brilliant piece by Siberia’s Presnyakov Brothers is the way it extends the definition of ‘terrorism’ to embrace most of modern Russian life. Structurally, the play is rather like a violent version of La Ronde; tonally, its mood of dazzling apocalyptic farce suggests the novels of Kurt Vonnegut or Joseph Heller. . . .
