Bard Violinist Shawn Moore Debuts With the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra (WCO), conducted by Artistic Director David Leighton, continues its season with the WCO debut of brilliant young violinist Shawn Moore performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Another exciting young Bard talent, Ian Garvie, will conduct the WCO in the Overture from Rossini’s La Scala di Seta. Completing the program are the Schubert Symphony in C and the world premiere of Woodstock Variations, composed for the WCO by Dr. Ambrose C. Jackson. The concert takes place at Olin Hall on the Bard College campus on Friday, December 12, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $5.00 for students, and free to the Bard community with identification. (This program is repeated at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 13 at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Avenue, Kingston, and at 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 14 at Bearsville Theater, Route 212, 1 mile west of Woodstock.)

Shawn Moore is in his junior year at Bard College, studying with Ida Kavafian and Arnold Steinhardt and pursuing a double B.A./B.Mus. degree with The Bard Conservatory of Music program. He has performed with the American Symphony Orchestra as a guest soloist for the Bard Music Festival, performing a rarely heard work by Charles Villiers Stanford, and has soloed with the Kishwaukee and Knox-Galesburg orchestras. He has also been a guest artist at the Bard Music Festival of the Hamptons. Moore is an avid chamber musician, and has twice been a laureate of the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. He has been invited two times to play on the nationally syndicated program From the Top, once in collaboration with Joshua Bell, and once as a recipient of a grant for continuing musical study from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

Ian Garvie graduated from Vassar College in 2007 with a degree in piano performance. While there, he studied conducting with Eduardo Navega, and for two years served as music director for a student-run contemporary music ensemble. He is currently working on his master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Bard College, studying with Maestro Harold Farberman. This past year he has had extensive conducting opportunities with the Bard Conservatory Orchestra and Conductor’s Institute Orchestra, and has served as assistant conductor for the Bard Orchestra, Chamber Singers, and Bard Symphonic Choir.

Dr. Ambrose C. Jackson’s Woodstock Variationsutilizes musical themes from folk songs Dr. Jackson heard in Cameroon while researching his doctoral thesis in ethnomusicology. Jackson is a renowned local composer who also plays trumpet in the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra and teaches in the Ellenville school district.

The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now is comprised of professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. The WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and each season performs in Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, and at Bard College.

The WCO concerts at Bard are presented in cooperation with The Bard Center. For additional information or to purchase tickets, call 845-246-7045 or visit www.wco-online.com.
