Bard College Conservatory of Music Presents Fourth Annual Concerto Competition December 13 - 14

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Students from The Bard College Conservatory of Music are set to compete in the fourth annual Concerto Competition. The preliminary round is held in Olin Hall on Saturday, December 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The final round is held in the Sosnoff Theater of the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, December 14, at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to view the competition free of charge and no reservations are necessary. Winners of the competition will perform as soloists with the American Symphony Orchestra and the Bard Conservatory Orchestra at Bard’s Fisher Center in the 2009–10 season.

“This is a thrilling opportunity for the competitors, with the winners going on to perform as soloists with the American Symphony Orchestra,” said Robert Martin, director of the Conservatory. “The past winners have rewarded us with outstanding performances that have consistently earned standing ovations.” Last year 21 students from the Conservatory participated in the competition. This year’s judges are Susan Wadsworth, founder and director of Young Concert Artists, Inc., which is dedicated to discovering and launching the careers of gifted musicians (including Murray Perahia, Pinchas Zukerman, Emanuel Ax, Richard Goode, and Dawn Upshaw); Bonnie Hampton, cellist and faculty member at the Juilliard School of Music; Todd Crow, professor of piano at Vassar College; Gill DeJean, bassoonist with the American Symphony Orchestra; and Leon Botstein, president of Bard College and music director and principal conductor of both the American Symphony Orchestra in New York and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the radio orchestra of Israel.

Building on its distinguished history in the arts and education, Bard College launched The Bard College Conservatory of Music in 2005. This innovative, double-degree program is guided by the principle that musicians should be broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences to achieve their greatest potential. While training and studying for the bachelor of music degree with world-class musicians and teachers and performing in state-of-the art facilities, such as the Frank Gehry–designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Conservatory students also pursue a bachelor of arts degree at Bard, one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges. Robert Martin serves as director of the Conservatory, Melvin Chen as associate director.
