The Bard Conservatory Orchestra Performs in Sosnoff  Sunday, May 3

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Sunday, May 3, The Bard College Conservatory of Music presents the Bard Conservatory Orchestra conducted by Gisele Ben-Dor. The program includes Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6, Op. 60 in D Major; Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo, and Finale, Op.52; and Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Trumpet Concerto, Op. 94 with Conservatory faculty member Carl Albach, soloist. Free and open to the public, the program begins at 3 p.m. in the acoustically superb Sosnoff Theater at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Conductor Gisèle Ben-Dor is described by the Los Angeles Times as “a star on the rise, a ferocious talent.” “Ben-Dor casts her spell,” the Boston Globe reported, "a tremendous musician, expert technician, charismatic performer.” Ben-Dor has appeared as guest conductor with major orchestras and opera houses throughout the world including the New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, BBC/Wales, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Pops, New World Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, among many others. Maestra Ben-Dor is currently Conductor Laureate of the Santa Barbara Symphony.

Carl Albach, trumpet, from Dallas, Texas, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami, where he studied with Gilbert Johnson, and his master’s degree at The Juilliard School, where he studied with William Vacchiano. He is the principal trumpet of the American Symphony Orchestra and was recently made a member of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, having performed regularly with both for more than 20 years. He was a soloist with the American Symphony in June 2007, performing the Mieczyslaw Weinberg Trumpet Concerto at Avery Fisher Hall. Albach is currently a faculty member of The Bard College Conservatory of Music.

The Bard College Conservatory of Music is an innovative, five-year, double-degree program guided by the principle that musicians should be broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences to achieve their greatest potential. While training and studying for the bachelor of music degree with world-class musicians and teachers and performing in state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Frank Gehry–designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, Bard Conservatory students also pursue a bachelor of arts degree at Bard, one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges. The Conservatory’s instrumental and composition faculty includes renowned musicians and composers. The Da Capo Chamber Players is in residence. Members and principals of the American Symphony Orchestra are also available for instruction, coaching, and leading of sectional rehearsals in the Conservatory Orchestra.
