Bard College Presents Violinist and Violist Helena Baillie and Pianist Roman Rabinovich in Recital on January 30

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Violinist and violist Helena Baillie and pianist Roman Rabinovich will perform in recital at Bard College on Saturday, January 30. Free and open to the public, the program begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. No reservations are necessary; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The evening’s program will include Vitali’s Chaconne for Viola and Piano; Takemitsu’s “A Bird Came Down the Walk”; Schubert’s “Arpeggione” Sonata for Viola and Piano in A Minor, D.821; Paganini’s La Campanella; Pärt’s Fratres for Violin and Piano; and Mozart’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in B-flat Major, K. 454.

Helena Baillie was born in London to a musical family. She graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied violin and viola. Her 2008 New York violin recital debut at Bargemusic was hailed by The Strad magazine for its “brilliance and poignance.” Baillie has appeared in chamber music with Pinchas Zukerman and with the Beaux Arts Trio at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. She has performed at Carnegie Hall in the Alexander Schneider Series and given recitals throughout Europe and the United States. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Barenreiter-urtext Prize at the 2004 Munich ARD competition, and prizes at the 2001 Banff and 2003 Tertis competitions. Her performances are regularly broadcast on Performance Today for American Public Radio. She studied with the first violinists of the Guarneri, Emerson, Vermeer, Juilliard, and Tokyo quartets: Arnold Steinhardt, Philip Setzer, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Robert Mann, and Peter Oundjian. At Curtis, she studied viola with Roberto Diaz and Joseph de Pasquale, and with Wilfried Strehle, principal viola, Berlin Philharmonic. Her work in chamber music has been guided by Isaac Stern, Lorand Fenyves, Felix Galimir, and Leon Fleisher.

Twenty-three-year-old Israeli pianist Roman Rabinovich has been praised for his “vivacity and virtuosity” and “impeccable clarity of execution,” and has performed throughout Europe and the United States in such venues as Leipzig’s Gewandhaus and London’s Wigmore Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, and the Metropolitan Museum, as well as the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, Salle Cortot in Paris, and Millennium Stage of Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. He won the top prize in the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein competition, first prizes at the Animato and the Arjil Piano Competitions in Paris and the Frank Peleg Piano Competition, and was named Vendome Virtuosi in 2006. At age 10, he made his Israel Philharmonic debut under the baton of Zubin Mehta and also performed with the IPO and Maestro Mehta in 1999 and 2003. He has appeared as a soloist with most of the Israeli orchestras, and with Buffalo Philharmonic, Ann Arbor Symphony, and Delaware Symphony, among others. He has participated in such international festivals as Ravinia’s Steans Institute, Verbier Academy in Switzerland, and Conservatoire Week in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has been featured on radio and TV in Israel, Italy, Germany, and the United States. Rabinovich was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and immigrated with his family, in 1994, to Israel, where he studied with Arie Vardi. He graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music as a student of Seymour Lipkin. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree with Robert McDonald at The Juilliard School.
