Bard College’s Master of Arts in Teaching Program to Hold Open House on Saturday, February 6

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Bard College Master of Arts in Teaching Program will hold an open house for prospective students on Saturday, February 6. Interested students and their families will have an opportunity to speak with faculty, admissions representatives, and a current student. The event takes place at 10 a.m. in the Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Center for Science and Computation at Bard College. Light refreshments will be served and a campus tour will begin at 11 a.m. The open house and tour are free and open to the public. For more information on the open house, please e-mail [email protected] or call 1-800-460-3243; online registration can be completed at www.bard.edu/mat.

The Bard College Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program was founded in 2003 to respond to an urgent need for change in public education. This transformation requires teachers who can help secondary school students develop the thoughtful self-determination that builds from a genuine enthusiasm for learning. At the program’s core is an integrated curriculum leading to a master of arts in teaching degree and a teaching certificate for grades 7–12 in one of four areas: literature, mathematics, biology, or history. Having completed an undergraduate degree in their chosen field, incoming students continue their studies in that field while they take education courses that challenge them to apply the results of research and pedagogical analysis to the actual work of teaching. Combined with student-teaching experiences and the active participation of mentor teachers and MAT faculty advisers, the program’s instructionally innovative courses provide the basis for critical reflection on educational practice. Students can earn the degree in one-year, full-time or two-year, part-time options. Fellowships from the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation and from Math for America are available to students committed to teaching in New York City public schools.

The MAT Program is based on three campuses: in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York City’s BHSEC Queens, and California. MAT student teachers work at public schools in Red Hook, New York, and New York City; and at the Paramount Academy, a charter school in Delano, California. For more information about Bard’s MAT Program, please call 845-758-7145, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.bard.edu/mat.
