The Bard Orchestra Performs in the Sosnoff Theater, Thursday, April 15

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— The Bard College Orchestra will perform in concert on Thursday, April 15 at 8 p.m., in the Sosnoff Theater in the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Under the direction of conductor Nathan Madsen, the program features guest pianist Manon Hutton-DeWys performing Joan Tower’s Piano Concerto, (Homage to Beethoven), (1985). Other works to be performed include Jennifer Jolley’s “All Grief Empty, the Clear Night Passe” (2008); Ernst Bloch’s Concerto Grosso for Piano and Strings (1925); Silvestre Revultas’s, Ocho por Radio (1933); and Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Music for Small Orchestra (1926). A graduate of both Bard College (B.A. '06) and Bard College at Simon's Rock (A.A. '03), pianist Manon Hutton-DeWys has long been earning praise and recognition for her accomplishments as a performer. While a student at Bard, Hutton-DeWys was a two-time winner of the Bard College Concerto Competition and performed with the American Symphony Orchestra and the Bard Orchestra. She was also awarded the Margaret Creal Shaefer Memorial Prize in Music, the Reader's Digest Foundation Scholarship, and the Dr. Richard M. Siegel Memorial Prize in Music. In 2009 Hutton-DeWys earned her Master of Music degree in piano from Mannes College of Music, where she studied with Jerome Rose. Within the past two years she has performed in some of classical music's best-known halls, including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and the Salle Cortot at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. In Musical America she was described by Christian Carey as “an artist possessing a great deal of promise,” and was commended for her “sensitive dynamic shadings and subtle use of rubato.” An enthusiast of new music, in 2008 Hutton-DeWys was named winner of the young artists’ competition in conjunction with Keys to the Future, a festival for contemporary piano music in New York City. She has premiered works by a number of living composers; most notably, she gave the U.S. premiere of Arvo Pärt’s “Pari Intervallo” at Mannes College of Music in February, 2009. Ms. Hutton-DeWys lives and works in New York City, and is on the piano faculty of Greenwich House School of Music and the Waterfront Montessori School in Jersey City, NJ.
