Bard College and the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra Present Romantic Violin and Star-Crossed Lovers

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— Local audiences, dazzled by violinist Shawn Moore’s performances last year with the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, will have another opportunity to hear the young Bard Conservatory virtuoso in Max Bruch’s Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, conducted by Artistic Director David Leighton. This epic concerto, a tour-de-force for the soloist, is also considered a high point of Romantic music.  There will be two interpretations of star-crossed lovers, as expressed by Gabriel Fauré in his incidental music to Maeterlinck’s play, Pelléas et Mélisande, and by Fredrick Delius in “The Walk to Paradise Garden,” from his opera, A Village Romeo and Juliet. Robert Schumann’s two-hundredth birthday will be celebrated with his Overture, Scherzo and Finale, and for a little Impressionist contrast, the orchestra will play Claude Debussy’s Two Arabesques, conducted by guest conductors from the Bard Conservatory. The concert is presented on Thursday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in Olin Hall, and will be repeated at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center in Kingston, and on 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. Subscription sets are available (four tickets good for any concert). For more information call (845) 246-7045.

Shawn Moore is in his fourth year at the Bard College Conservatory, studying with Ida Kavafian and working toward a degree in Asian Studies. Shawn has performed with the American Symphony Orchestra under Leon Botstein in the rarely-heard Violin Concerto by Charles Villiers Stanford, and has also soloed with the Kishwaukee and Knox-Galesburg orchestras.  He has performed as guest artist with the Bard Music Festival of the Hamptons, is a laureate of the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, and has appeared in collaboration with Joshua Bell on the nationally syndicated program, “From the Top.”  He spent most of 2009 in China studying Mandarin.

The WOODSTOCK CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now is comprised of professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. The WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and each season performs in Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, and at Bard College.
