ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—This September, the Bard Free Press, Bard College’s student newspaper, and the Bard Center for Civic Engagement present the Free Press Journalism Seminar Series, featuring leading journalists, newspaper publishers, writers, and scholars discussing the state of journalism today, from the role of journalists in society to ways of becoming a journalist. All seminars are free and open to the public. The first seminar, “What Is the Role of Journalism in Today’s Society?” takes place on Wednesday, September 7, at 7 p.m. in Olin Hall. Participants include John Daniszewski, vice president and senior managing editor of The Associated Press; Jim Ottaway Jr., Bard College trustee and former chairman of Ottaway Newspapers, Inc., the community newspaper subsidiary of Dow Jones & Co.; Geddy Sveikauskas, publisher of Ulster Publishing, which publishes weekly newspapers in the mid-Hudson region, including the Kingston Times, Woodstock Times, and Almanac; and, as moderator, Jonathan Becker, Bard vice president and dean for international affairs and civic engagement.

The second seminar, “How Can I Be a Journalist?” takes place Monday, September 12 at 7 p.m., in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Participants are Luc Sante, visiting professor of writing and photography at Bard and an award-winning writer and critic who is a frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books; Daniel Mendelsohn, Charles Ranlett Flint Professor of Humanities at Bard, also an award-winning writer and critic whose reviews and essays about books, films, and theater have appeared in the New York Yorker, the New York Times, and New York Magazine, among other publications; Eric Durr, communications director for the New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs; and Debbie Kwiatoski, managing editor of the Hudson Valley Business Journal. Last, there will be a Meet & Greet with Bard Free Press staff on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Bertelsmann Campus Center.
