The Bard Center Presents The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra Music Director Search Season

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra opens its 33rd season with four audition concerts as part of its search for a new music director.  The first concert includes the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, featuring clarinetist Justin Stanley, Beethoven’s “Coriolan” overture, and the “Siegfried Idyll” of Richard Wagner. The concert begins with composer Lee Actor’s short 2009 work, “Opening Remarks.” Marissa Kaczynski, a 2009 graduate of the Bard College orchestral conducting program, will conduct.  The first performance is at 8 p.m. Friday, September 16 in Bard College’s Olin Hall, and will be repeated at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 18 at the orchestra’s new performance venue, the recently renovated Woodstock Playhouse, in Woodstock, NY. In November the orchestra will present Mozart’s “Prague” Symphony No. 38 in D Major under the baton of Miriam Burns, music director of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Kenosha Symphony and the Orchestra of the Redeemer in New York City.  That concert also includes the Concertino for Trombone and String Orchestra by Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson, with trombonist Sean Scott Reed.  In March, conductor Nathan Madsen, a previous WCO guest conductor, presents an orchestra version of Bach’s Cantata No. 140, “Wachet Auf,” along with the Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor with WCO principle cellist Ling Kwan, and Mozart’s “Paris” Symphony No. 3 in D Major.  The season concludes in April with conductor Teresa Cheung leading the orchestra in George Frideric Handel’s Concerto for Oboe No. 3, featuring WCO principle oboe Alison Bitz, along with Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony No. 36 in C Major.


The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, formed in 1980 by musicians from the Woodstock area, now is comprised of professional musicians from the entire Hudson Valley. The WCO regularly commissions music by local and regional composers and performs in Woodstock and at Bard College in Dutchess county.
