Bard College Breaks Ground on $2.1 Million Renovation and Expansion of Stevenson Gymnasium

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— On Saturday, October 29, Bard College broke ground on a $2.1 million renovation and expansion of the Stevenson Gymnasium. During the ceremony, Bard President Leon Botstein spoke about Bard’s commitment to athletics and wellness, as well as the balance between athletics and academics. The first phase of the project, which begins this month, includes a 7,500-square-foot addition featuring four new regulation squash courts with a mezzanine viewing area, new athletic department offices, a conference room, and a new entrance and lobby area. The second phase, which will start at the completion of the first phase, will convert existing squash courts into additional weight and cardio fitness areas, doubling their current size; add or renovate classrooms for yoga, aerobics, Pilates, and spin cycling; and improve the women’s locker room. The project, which is expected to be completed by late spring 2012, was made possible by Charles P. Stevenson Jr., chair of Bard’s Board of Trustees, and by anonymous donors.

The 59,000-square-foot Stevenson Gymnasium complex was opened in 1989 and is the centerpiece of Bard’s Athletic Department facilities. It contains a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool, fitness centers with cardiovascular and strength training equipment, glass-backed squash courts, men’s and women’s locker rooms with saunas, an aerobics studio, an athletic training room, and a main gymnasium, which houses basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts, as well as spectator areas. Adjacent to the building are six lighted, hard-surface tennis courts, the Lorenzo Ferrari Soccer and Lacrosse Complex, a rugby field, miles of groomed cross-country running and Nordic skiing trails, and multipurpose fields. Bard College and its athletics programs are a member of the NCAA Division III and the Liberty League, offering 16 intercollegiate programs, along with club sports, intramurals, and instructional classes.

Membership benefits are available at no cost to Bard College students, faculty, staff, and their immediate family members. Membership options are available for local area residents. For more information Stevenson Gymnasium and Bard Athletics, visit www.bardathletics.com.
