The Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle (HVCMC), an association of chamber music lovers that is celebrating its 63rd season, was founded by Helen Huntington Hull and two friends from Staatsburg, New York. They enlisted the help of violinist Emil Hauser, then a member of the Bard College faculty and original first violinist of the Budapest Quartet, to invite musicians to perform at the Mills and Vanderbilt Mansions. In 1979, the concert series began its association with Bard College. The HVCMC remains a venue that attracts many of the world’s preeminent chamber music artists. In 2000, Sharon Robinson and Jaime Laredo assumed artistic directorship of the chamber music series. For more information, go to www.hvcmc.org.

About the Performers

Praised by the New Yorker as “a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets,” the Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. In the 11 years of its existence, the Daedalus Quartet has received plaudits from critics and listeners alike for the security, technical finish, interpretive unity, and sheer gusto of its performances. The New York Times has praised the Daedalus Quartet’s “insightful and vibrant” Haydn, the “impressive intensity” of its Beethoven, their “luminous” Berg, and the “riveting focus” of their Dutilleux. The Washington Post has acclaimed the group’s performance of Mendelssohn for its “rockets of blistering virtuosity,” while the Houston Chronicle has described the “silvery beauty” of its Schubert and the “magic that hushed the audience” when the quartet played Ravel; the Boston Globe the “finesse and fury” of its Shostakovich; the Toronto Globe and Mail the “thrilling revelation” of its Hindemith; and the Cincinnati Enquirer the “tremendous emotional power” of their Brahms. Since its founding, the Daedalus Quartet has performed in many of the world’s leading musical venues and has forged associations with some of America’s leading classical music and educational institutions. Daedalus Quartet is Min-Young Kim and Matilda Kaul, violins; Jessica Thompson, viola; and Thomas Kraines, cello. For more information go to www.daedalusquartet.com.

Thirty-five years after its debut at the White House, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio continues to bring technical mastery, expressive depth, and magnetism to the concert stage. Carnegie Hall commemorated the trio’s 30th anniversary in 2007 with a concert in Stern Auditorium. Richard Danielpour devoted a piano quartet in honor of the anniversary, which has become a part of the group’s extensive repertoire. One of today’s most beloved ensembles, these three artists share their passion for music with audiences worldwide. The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio is Joseph Kalichstein, piano; Jaime Laredo, violin; and Sharon Robinson, cello. For more information go to www.kalichstein-laredo-robinson-trio.com/

Praised in the New York Times as having “everything one wants in a quartet: a rich, precisely balanced sound, a broad coloristic palette, real unity of interpretive purpose and seemingly unflagging energy,” the Miami String Quartet has established its place among the most widely respected quartets in America. The Miami String Quartet has appeared extensively throughout the United States and Europe and the ensemble’s interest in new music has led to many commissions and premieres. For more than 20 years, the group’s diversity in programming, poise in performance, keen sense of ensemble, and impeccable musicality has made the Miami String Quartet one of the most sought after quartets in chamber music today. The Miami String Quartet is Benny Kim and Cathy Meng Robinson, violin; Scott Lee, viola; and Keith Robinson, cello. For more information, go to www.miamistringquartet.com.
