Bard College Landscape and Arboretum Program and New York Botanical Garden to Offer Continuing Education Classes

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Landscape and Arboretum Program at Bard College and the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) are offering noncredit continuing education classes on gardening at Bard College this winter and spring. Open to the public, these classes feature some of the top names in the horticulture industry and cover a wide array of topics. To register, visit www.nybg.org/adulted/ or call 1-800-322-NYBG. All classes are held in the Franklin W. Olin Humanities Building at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, unless otherwise indicated.

In addition, on Thursday, March 20, the Landscape and Arboretum Program will continue its monthly Bard Arboretum Walks with the Director series with Arboretum Director Amy Parrella ’99. The walks take place 1-2 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, March through November. Parrella will lead a leisurely stroll around the campus to explore some of the unique and beautiful trees that make up Bard’s landscape. CREATE A LOW-MAINTENANCE NATIVE PERENNIAL GARDEN

Saturday, February 22, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Native plants and wildflowers are excellent alternatives to their non-native counterparts, and they provide habitat and food for birds and insects that keep our ecosystems in balance. Learn which natives are best suited to various conditions (sun, shade, and a range of soil types); which combinations provide continuous blooms from spring to fall; and tips on growing and maintaining these low-maintenance perennials.

PRUNING: HOW, WHEN, AND WHERE

This course covers the basics of pruning evergreens, deciduous trees, and shrubs and how to maintain the woody plants in your garden. Bring your pruners—we’ll discuss tool selection and maintenance, then spend the afternoon outdoors analyzing proper techniques. Class is held rain or shine. About the intructors:

Anne Christian is a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden’s School of Professional Horticulture. She is the horticulture community educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County and has worked for the New York City Parks Department and at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture.

Michael Ruggiero is the horticulturist at Matterhorn Nursery in Spring Valley, N.Y. He is the former senior curator of horticulture and a long-time instructor at the New York Botanical Garden. He is the author of several books and writes and lectures frequently on gardening topics.

Paul Trader is a retired horticulture educator and former executive director for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland County. He holds a master’s degree in integrated pest management and has more than 30 years of experience in ornamental horticulture.
