Bard Professor Julia Rosenbaum Named Senior Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Julia Rosenbaum, associate professor of art history and faculty of the American Studies Program, has been named a senior fellow at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., for the 2015–2016 academic year. The yearlong research fellowship will support Rosenbaum’s new project, “Curated Bodies: The Display of Science and Citizenry in Post-Civil War America,” which examines art, science, and representations of the body from the Civil War to World War II. Rosenbaum will be affiliated with the Smithsonian American Art Museum during her fellowship tenure.

Rosenbaum received her B.A. from Yale University and her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of Visions of Belonging: New England Art and the Making of American Identity (Cornell University Press, 2006), co-editor of The American Bourgeoisie: Distinction and Identity in the Nineteenth Century (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), and has published articles in numerous scholarly journals and edited volumes, including American Art and The Encyclopedia of New England. Her previous awards include a Terra Foundation for American Art symposium grant, National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute fellowships, a Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship in American Art, as well as multiple teaching awards while at Harvard University.

About Bard College
Founded in 1860, Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, is an independent, nonsectarian, residential, coeducational college offering a four-year B.A. program in the liberal arts and sciences and a five-year B.A./B.S. degree in economics and finance. Internationally, Bard confers dual B.A. degrees at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. Petersburg State University, Russia (Smolny College); American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan; and Bard College Berlin: A Liberal Arts University; as well as dual B.A. and M.A.T. degrees at Al-Quds University in the West Bank.

Bard offers nearly 50 academic programs in four divisions. Total enrollment for Bard College and its affiliates is approximately 5,000 students. About the Smithsonian American Art Museum
The Smithsonian American Art Museum celebrates the vision and creativity of Americans with artworks in all media spanning more than three centuries. Its National Historic Landmark building is located at Eighth and F streets N.W., above the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metrorail station. Museum hours are 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily (closed Dec. 25). Admission is free.

Since 1970, the museum has hosted more than 565 scholars who now occupy positions in academic and cultural institutions across the United States and in Australia, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and South America.

The museum maintains six online art-research databases with more than a half million records, including the Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture that document more than 400,000 artworks in public and private collections worldwide and extensive photographic collections documenting American art and artists. An estimated 180,000-volume library specializing in American art, history and biography is shared with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
