Northern Dutchess NAACP Honors Mariel Fiori ’05, Cofounder and Managing Editor of Bard College-Sponsored La Voz, Cultura y Noticias Hispanas del Valle de Hudson

Award-Winning Spanish Language Magazine Serves 140,000 Latinos Living in the Hudson Valley and Catskill Regions

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.— Mariel Fiori ’05, managing editor and cofounder of La Voz, cultura y noticias hispanas del Valle de Hudson has received the Northern Dutchess NAACP’s Humanitarian Award. Sponsored by Bard College, La Voz is an award-winning Spanish language magazine that serves more than 140,000 Latinos living in the Hudson Valley and Catskill regions. Fiori received the award at the NAACP’s second annual Freedom Fund Banquet in Poughkeepsie. The event’s keynote speaker was former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

“Accepting the status quo is not part of my blood, my upbringing, or my background,” said Fiori.  “We need to use whatever tools we possess, be it education, network, time, or money, to help improve the part of the world where we live.”

Mariel Fiori ’05 is a journalist, translator, educator and an entrepreneur. She cofounded and is the managing editor of the Bard-sponsored La Voz, cultura y noticias hispanas del Valle de Hudson. Now celebrating its 12th anniversary, the award- winning La Voz is the only Spanish language magazine serving the 140,000 Latinos living in the Mid-Hudson Valley. She co-hosts a weekly Spanish language news radio show for WGXC and WHDD, and is a bilingual business counselor and instructor with WEDC-MHV (Women Enterprise Development Center Mid-Hudson Valley). Fiori has an M.B.A. degree from New York University Stern School of Business and a B.A. degree in Spanish and Latin American and Iberian Studies from Bard College.

La Voz, cultura y noticias hispanas del Valle de Hudson (The Voice, Hispanic Culture and News from the Hudson Valley), is an award-winning free Spanish language magazine serving the 140,000 Latinos living in the Hudson Valley and Catskill regions. Thanks mostly to volunteers, this magazine (that was founded in 2004 as a TLS student project at Bard College by Emily Schmall and Mariel Fiori) is a highly respected local publication, winning awards for its overall design and cultural content from the New York Community Media Alliance and from the Dutchess County Executive. La Voz prints and distributes 5,000 copies each month throughout Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Columbia counties for an estimated 25,000 readers.
