Bard College Presents The Anthony Hecht Lectures in the Humanities Featuring Renowned Artist and Designer Maya Lin

At the Intersection of Art and Architecture and The “Memory Works”
Monday, October 23 and Tuesday, October 24

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY— The Anthony Hecht Lectures in the Humanities at Bard College  presents renowned artist and designer Maya Lin in two talks: At the Intersection of Art and Architecture, on Monday, October 23,  and The “Memory Works” on Tuesday, October 24.  The receptoions take place at 4:30 p.m. with the lectures following at 5 p.m. in Weis Cinema, Bertelsmann Campus Center. Admission is free and open to the public and no reservations are required. For more information go to www.bard.edu.

The work of artist and designer Maya Lin balances art and architecture. Her installations, studio artworks, architecture, and memorials, such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, merge physical and psychological environments and present new ways of seeing the world. In 2009 Lin was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence, and in 2016 she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her widely acclaimed memorials.

Lin’s memorials address the critical social and historical issues of our time. From the Vietnam memorial, which she designed as an undergraduate at Yale University, to the Civil Rights Memorial in Alabama and The Women’s Table at Yale, she makes our history part of the landscape.

Her work asks the viewer to reconsider nature and the environment at a time when it is crucial to do so. A committed environmentalist, she is working on What Is Missing?, a global memorial to the planet—located in select scientific institutions, as a website, and in a book—calling attention to the crisis surrounding biodiversity and habitat loss.

Lin has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide, with works in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Smithsonian Institution.

THE ANTHONY HECHT LECTURES IN THE HUMANITIES AT BARD COLLEGE were established in 2007 to honor the memory of this preeminent poet by reflecting his lifelong interest in literature, music, the visual arts, and our cultural history. Anthony Hecht graduated from Bard in 1944 and taught at the College from 1952 to 1955 and 1962 to 1966.

Every two years a distinguished scholar delivers a series of lectures at Bard College and in New York City that addresses works close to Hecht’s own imagination and sympathies. Each lecture series is published by Yale University Press.
