Bard College and The Garden Conservancy Host Celebration of Blithewood Garden with Lawn Party, Garden Tours, and Panel Discussion on Saturday, September 22

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Saturday, September 22, the Friends of Blithewood Garden and the Garden Conservancy will host a celebration of historic Blithewood Garden at Bard College. The event, “A Celebration of Blithewood Garden: 115 Years of Beauty on the Hudson,” includes a garden party on the Blithewood lawn, as well as a panel discussion featuring leading garden historians and preservationists. Located in the heart of the Hudson River National Historic Landmarks District and overlooking the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains, Blithewood Garden is considered a nationally significant Beaux Arts gem. The garden, built circa 1903 by Francis L. V. Hoppin, is one of the few complete Hudson River estate gardens that remain from the era.

The afternoon lawn party is a free family event with birthday cupcakes and snacks, children’s lawn games, garden tours, and goats. It takes place from 2 to 4 p.m., rain or shine, on the lawn outside Blithewood Mansion, the research and conference facility of the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. Visit annandaleonline.org/blithewoodcelebration. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

The panel discussion, “The Architectural Garden: Challenges of Preserving Formal Structures in the Landscape,” takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Levy Economics Institute and features Judith Tankard, author and garden historian; Sarah Vance, director of the Blue Garden in Newport, Rhode Island; and Stephen Byrns, president of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy in Yonkers, New York. James Brayton Hall, president and CEO of the Garden Conservancy—Bard’s partner in the rehabilitation of Blithewood Garden—will moderate the panel. Light refreshments will precede the panel from 5-5:30 p.m. The panel discussion fee is $30 for Garden Conservancy members, $35 for nonmembers. Proceeds will benefit the rehabilitation of Blithewood Garden. Register online at annandaleonline.org/blithewoodcelebration. For more information, call 845-758-7867 or email [email protected].

The Blithewood celebration is sponsored by the Friends of Blithewood Garden, the Garden Conservancy, and Bard College. To learn more about Blithewood Garden, please visit bard.edu/arboretum/gardens/blithewood.
