DA CAPO CHAMBER PLAYERS PRESENT "VISIONS AND VOYAGES FROM RUSSIAN POETRY" IN CONCERT AT BARD COLLEGE.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The Da Capo Chamber Players will perform an evening of twentieth-century chamber music featuring a premiere of a new work by Louis Karchin based on poetry by renowned Siberian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko on Friday, January 29. "Visions and Voyages from Russian Poetry," sponsored by The Bard Center, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall. The concert is open to the public without charge.

Joining the Da Capo Chamber Players in a program that explores the relationship between the poetry and chamber music of Russia are guest soloists Lucy Shelton, soprano, and André Solomon-Glover, baritone. The concert features the world premiere of American Visions (Two Songs on Poems of Yevgeny Yevtushenko), a work by Louis Karchin based on Yevtushenko's poems "Who Are You, Grand Canyon?" and "Requiem for Challenger." This work will be conducted by the composer and performed by the ensemble with Solomon-Glover. Shelton joins the ensemble for Judith Shatin's Songs of Anna Akhmatova ("The Muse," "All is Plundered," and "The Souls of All My Dear Ones") and Dmitri Shostakovich's Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok.

Da Capo, winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1973, is widely acclaimed for its virtuosity, stimulating programs, and openness to a wide spectrum of styles in new music. Its dedication to working with composers is matched by its commitment to rehearsing a piece as a living, moving, breathing entity, rather than a fixed blueprint to be executed precisely and perfectly. The Da Capo Chamber Players are Patricia Spencer, flute; Jo-Ann Sternberg, clarinet; Eva Gruesser, violin; André Emelianoff, cello; Lisa Moore, piano, with guest artist Stephen Gosling, piano; and Pablo Rieppi, percussion.
