BILL BAIRD, ABORTION AND REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ACTIVIST TO SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-Bill Baird, director of the Pro-Choice League, will speak on "The Politics of God, Government, and Sex," at Bard College on Tuesday, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bertelsmann Campus Center Theater. The talk is sponsored by the Women's Alliance of Bard College in celebration of Women's History Month.Bill Baird has been a prochoice activist since the 1960s. He gained notoriety on opening the nation's first birth control and abortion counseling center on Long Island in 1964, six years before abortion became legal in New York State and a decade prior to Roe v. Wade. After his arrest in 1967 for distributing contraceptives to college students in Boston, Baird successfully challenged the law in the Supreme Court in 1973 (Baird v. Eisenstadt). The resulting change in law allowed single women access to birth control. Baird's Pro-Choice League, founded after his abortion clinics closed in the early '90s, operates a clinic-on-wheels, which he says "teaches poor people about AIDS, birth control, and abortion."
The talk is free and open to the public, with a donation for the nonprofit Pro-Choice League suggested.
