AMERICAN SYMPHONY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM SEASON FINALE AT BARD AND VASSAR.

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The American Symphony Chamber Orchestra, directed by Leon Botstein, will perform Schoenberg, Grieg, and Dvorák in the season finale of the 1998-99 Bard-Vassar Concerts. The performances will be in Olin Hall at Bard College on Friday, April 30, and in Skinner Hall at Vassar College on Saturday, May 1. Concerts begin at 8:00 p.m., following preconcert talks at 7:00 p.m.

Blanca Uribe will perform as soloist in Edvard Grieg's Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16. The concerts will also feature Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1, Op. 9, and Antonín Dvorák's "Czech" Suite in D Major, Op. 39.

The tradition, dedication, and quality that have been the hallmarks of the Bard-Vassar concerts throughout sixteen seasons continue to sustain the series, which showcases compositions and performances by members of the Bard and Vassar faculties. The innovative programming that brings together classical, contemporary, and new works for chamber orchestra continues to attract sell-out audiences to series concerts and strengthen both institutions' commitment to enriching the cultural life of the Hudson Valley.

About the Artists

Blanca Uribe, piano, called "a remarkable artist" by the New York Times and "an exceptional talent" by the Times of London, has elicited through her playing a rare combination of critical acclaim, peer esteem, and audience rapture. She enjoys a busy career as a soloist and chamber musician who often appears on stage in the United States and Europe. Uribe's recordings include the critically acclaimed Iberia Suite by Isaac Albéniz, the Danzas Fantásticas by Joaquín Turnia, and Vassar professor Richard Wilson's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra.

Leon Botstein, conductor, now in his seventh season as director of the American Symphony Orchestra, continues to revolutionize concert repertoire by championing rare masterpieces and contemporary music. The New York Times observed that "Mr. Botstein's adventurous programming in recent years seems to have cast him in a modest role of savior, bearing invigorating doses of the 'new' and the unusual." Among his most recent recordings are a forthcoming CD of the music of Karl Amadeus Hartmann with the London Philharmonic. He has also recorded Dohnányi's D Minor Symphony and Bruckner's Fifth Symphony with the London Philharmonic and Mendelssohn's Paulus with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Next month Koch International will release his recording of Max Bruch's oratorio Odysseus with the NDR Radio Philharmonic of Hannover.

Tickets for the American Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Bard-Vassar Concerts on Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1, are $15. For information and tickets, call 914-758-7425.
