JOHN ASHBERY POETRY SERIES BEGINS WITH READING BY THREE FRENCH POETS AT BARD COLLEGE ON FRIDAY, MARCH 3 Poets Emmanuel Hocquerd, Franck André Jamme, and Marcella Durand are featured

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The John Ashbery Poetry Series, sponsored by The Bard Center, will present the first in the spring series of readings at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3, at Bard College. Featuring three French poets, Emmanuel Hocquard, Franck André Jamme, and Marcella Durand, the reading is free and open to the public and will be held in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building.

The poets are also participating in the "French Poetry Festival," which features contemporary French poets giving readings across the United States in March. The festival is sponsored by Chenye Publishing and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York.

The John Ashbery Poetry Series continues with readings by Jenna Osman on March 17, Tom Raworth on March 24, Clark Coolidge and Michael Gizzi on April 14, and Rosmarie Waldrop and Keith Waldrop on April 28.

For further information, call 914-758-7425.

ABOUT THE POETS:

Emmanuel Hocquard's poems probe the world in quest of answers to our haunting questions. His most recent books in English are A Test of Solitude; This Story is Mine; Codicil & Plan for Pond 4: Two Works by Emmanuel Hocqurd; A Day in the Strait; The Theory of Tables; and Aeras in the Forest of Manhattan, translated by Bard professor Lydia Davis. Hocquard belonged to the Orange Export Ltd "group," a publishing house in the 1970s that brought previously unknown writers to the forefront of public attention.

Franck André Jamme, "a writer of rare quality" according to Henri Michaux, has published nine volumes of poetry and fragments, including La récitation de l'oubli, De la multiplication des brèches et des obstacles, and Encore une attaque silencieuse. He has also published numerous limited editions illustrated by such artists as James Brown, Olivier Debré, Suzan Frecon, Marc Couturier, Jan Voss, and Monique Frydman, among others. His poetry is included in the anthology The New French Poetry and in Searchlight: Consciousness at the Millennium. In addition to his poetry, he is a consulting curator who focuses on contemporary Indian art, especially on tantric, brut, and tribal fields.

Marcella Durand is the author of Lapsus Linguae and City of Ports. She is the program coordinator and web site editor for the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church and the poetry editor for Erato Press. Her poems and writings have appeared or are forthcoming in HOW(2), 6ix, Chain, Situation, Jacket, and Outlet.
