BEST-SELLING AUTHOR MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM WILL SPEAK AT BARD COLLEGE ON MONDAY, APRIL 24 He is "one of our very best writers," says Richard Eder in the Los Angeles Times

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham will speak at Bard College on Monday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. The talk, free and open to the public, will be held in Room 115 of the F. W. Olin Language Center and preceded by a reception for the author in the Olin Atrium at 6:45 p.m.

Cunningham will read from his recent best-selling, award-winning novel The Hours. With this novel Cunningham "deftly created something original, a trio of richly interwoven tales that alternate with one another chapter by chapter, each of them entering the thoughts of a character as she moves through the small details of the day," according to Jameson Currier of the Washington Post.

The Hours is inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway and draws inventively on the life and work of Woolf to tell the story of a group of contemporary characters who are struggling with the conflicting claims of love and inheritance, hope and despair.

Recipient of both the 1999 Pulitzer Prize and PEN/Faulkner Award for The Hours, Michael Cunningham was raised in Los Angeles and now lives in New York City. His novel A Home at the End of the World was published to acclaim in 1990; an excerpt entitled "White Angel" was published in The New Yorker and chosen for Best American Short Stories 1989. He received a Whiting Writer's Award in 1995, the year his novel Flesh and Blood was published.
