AWARD-WINNING TRANSLATOR OF HOMER'S ILIAD AND ODYSSEY, ROOBERT FAGLES, WILL GIVE A READING AT BARD COLLEGE ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY—Robert Fagles, the acclaimed translator of Homer\'s Iliad and Odyssey, will give a reading from his translations on Thursday, February 15, at Bard College. The reading, presented by the Languages and Literature Program at Bard College, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Room 102 of the F. W. Olin Humanities Building, and is free and open to the public.
\"These poems weren\'t meant as literature or words on a page to be read,\" notes Fagles in an interview with the Princeton Weekly Bulletin, \"but as a song in the air.\" Richard Jenkyns writing of the translation of The Odyssey in the New York Times Book Review, calls it a \"memorable achievement\" and notes, \"The verse idiom of the 20th century does not allow poets to create a grand style, but Mr. Fagles has been remarkably successful in finding a style that is of our time and yet timeless, dignified and yet animated by the vigor and energy essential to any good rendering of this poem.
Fagles is the Arthur W. Marks \'19 Professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton University. He is the recipient of the PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation and the 1996 Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for his translation of The Odyssey. He has received several awards for his translation of The Iliad, including the 1991 Harold Morton Landon Translation Award by the Academy of American Poets. His other translations include Sophocles\' Three Theban Plays and Aeschylus\' The Oresteia, which was nominated for a National Book Award in 1977. Fagles is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
