THE BARD IN CHINA PROGRAM PRESENTS NEW CHINESE FILM THE GARDEN OF HAPPINESS ON TUESDAY, MARCH 20 Bard senior Kerry Brogan costars with Wang Wei, winner of Best New Actor Award

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY-The Bard in China program presents the film The Garden of Happiness (Xingfu Huayuan), featuring Bard senior Kerry Brogan in a leading role, on Tuesday, March 20. The film is in Mandarin Chinese without subtitles and is free and open to the public. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m., in the Weis Cinema of the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Refreshments will be served after the screening.

The Garden of Happiness, directed by Sun Sha (awarded Best Director 1998), was shot entirely on location during the summer of 1998 in the Yunnan province of the People's Republic of China. The story follows an American girl (Brogan) as she travels in the mountains of Yunnan, falling in love not only with a handsome young villager of a tribal minority, but with lush, ethnicallydiverse southwestern China.. This film dramatizes the meeting of two vastly different cultures: it is a lyrical cross-cultural romance set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty.

Other upcoming Bard in China events include two lectures in April. On Thursday, April 19, Lu Zhi and Daniel Viederman will speak on environmental conservation in China. On Monday, April 23, Dr. Adam Segal will speak on "The Coming Arms Race with China? Missile Defense and U.S.-China Relations." Both events will take place at 7:30 p.m., in Room 115 of the Olin Language Center.

For further information, call the Bard in China program at 845-758-7388 or e-mail [email protected].
