CELLIST DAVID CALHOUN AND PIANIST JASON ANDREWS WILL PERFORM WORKS BY BRAHMS, RACHMANINOFF, AND SAMMARTINI ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18 AT BARD COLLEGE

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY-The Bard Center presents a concert on Wednesday, April 18, featuring cellist David Calhoun and pianist Jason Andrews. The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall on the Bard campus.

Calhoun and Andrews will perform G. B. Sammartini's Sonata in G Major; Johannes Brahms' Sonata in D Major for Cello and Piano, Op. 78; and Sergei Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G Minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 19.

Cellist David Calhoun has attracted the notice of today's visionary musicians, including David Amram, who sums up his credentials thus: "David Calhoun is what American music needs now . . . [he has] extraordinary talents as a virtuoso soloist and ensemble expert." He has performed live in-concert with Liza Minnelli at Carnegie Hall, in scenes with the Martha Clarke Dance Company, and chamber music collaborations with the great virtuoso violinist Eric Friedman. In addition to recitals and solo appearances with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Calhoun has been principal cellist of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, American Symphony Chamber Orchestra, American Ballet Theater Orchestra, and the New York City Opera Orchestra on tour. He has played with the Seacliff Chamber Players, New York Virtuosi Chamber Players, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Mostly Mozart Festival, and Omni Ensemble. Calhoun has recorded for RCA and frequently performs on live broadcasts for radio stations WQXR and WNYC in New York City. He has studied with Frank Miller, Channing Robbins, and Yo Yo Ma.

Pianist Jason Andrews is an active freelance pianist and coach who appears frequently in solo piano, vocal, and chamber music recitals. For two seasons he was the touring pianist for the Boys Choir of Harlem. He has performed both chamber and solo recitals in New York City at the St. Paul Festival of the Arts, Music at St. John in the Village recital series, St. Peter's Church of New York, Steinway Hall, and the Liederkranz Foundation's Recital Hall, among others. Andrews has won many competitions and awards, including the Corpus Christi International Young Artists' Competition, Kingsville International Young Performers Competition, Nena Plant Wideman Piano Competition, and the Music Teachers National Association Competition. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Marc Silverman and Phillip Kawin, and the late Mae S. Leeves and John Paul. Andrews currently teaches at the Caedmon School in Manhattan and the Mustard Seed School in Hoboken, New Jersey. He serves as music director for the Union United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, New York.
