ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The season finale of the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle (HVCMC) concert series at Bard College will feature the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, joined by violinist Philip Setzer and violist Lawrence Dutton of the Emerson Quartet. The concert, presented by The Bard Center, begins at 8:00 p.m. in Olin Hall on Saturday, June 23.
"The audience is wonderful and the hall is acoustically marvelous," says Sharon Robinson, co-artistic director of the HVCMC with her husband, Jaime Laredo. "You rarely get this kind of combination, which makes it a wonderful venue for musicians."
The program for the June 23 concert includes Beethoven's "Ghost" trio, Stanley Silverman's "In Celebration" trio, and Schubert's "Trout" quintet.
Performances by the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio have been a regular highlight of the HVCMC series since the late 1970s. Since making their debut at the White House for President Carter's inauguration in January 1977, the Trio-pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson-have shared both standard repertoire and commissioned works with loyal audiences in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia for over 20 consecutive seasons. During the 1999-2000 season, the Trio released its two-disc set of the complete chamber works of Ravel, and in February, made an appearance at a Carnegie Hall concert celebrating the 40th anniversary of Jaime Laredo's Carnegie debut recital. Rarely do three superb soloists come together to play chamber music with such quality; Robert C. Marsh of the Chicago Sun-Times to advises, "There is no finer piano trio!"
Noted as a "poetic violist" by the New Yorker, Lawrence Dutton has earned distinction as a member of the Emerson String Quartet, recitalist, soloist with orchestra, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher of viola and chamber music. Dutton has collaborated with many of the world's great performing artists, including Mstislav Rostropovich, Oscar Shumsky, Walter Trampler, Yefim Bronfman, and Misha Dichter. In addition, he has performed as a guest artist with numerous chamber music ensembles such as the Juilliard and Guarneri quartets and the Beaux Arts trio; and as a soloist with European and American orchestras, including those of Germany, Belgium, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Colorado, and Virginia. He has appeared at the Aspen, Sante Fe, Ravinia, and Chamber Music Northwest festivals, and collaborated with Isaac Stern in the International Chamber Music Encounters at Carnegie Hall and in Jerusalem.
A founding member of the Emerson String Quartet, violinist Philip Setzer performs over 100 concerts each season worldwide. He was a bronze medal recipient at the 1976 Queen Elisabeth International Competition in Brussels (one of only two Americans to receive a medal, the other being violinist Eugene Drucker). Setzer has participated in the Marlboro Music Festival and appeared as a guest soloist with the National Symphony and Cleveland Orchestras, as well as with the Aspen Chamber Symphony and the orchestras of Brussels, Omaha, Anchorage, Richmond, and Hartford, among others.
The Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle, which celebrated its 50th season in 2000, was founded by Helen Huntington Hull and two friends from Staatsburg, New York. They enlisted the help of Emil Hauser, a member of the Bard College faculty and original first violinist of the Budapest Quartet, to invite performing artists for concerts at the Mills and Vanderbilt Mansions. In 1979, the concert series began its association with Bard College. This season marks the debut of cellist Sharon Robinson and violinist Jaime Laredo as the HVCMC artistic directors.
