SECOND ANNUAL "JUVENALIA: A CHILDREN'S WINTER SOLSTICE CONCERT" WILL FEATURE A PERFORMANCE BY CHILDREN'S MUSIC STAR DAN ZANES December 22nd program will be held in Bard Hall at Bard College

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-The second annual "Juvenalia: A Children's Winter Solstice Concert" will take place at Bard College on Saturday, December 22. The program, which features children's music star Dan Zanes, will be held in Bard Hall and begins at 3:00 p.m. Admission is $6 per person.

"The idea behind the concert is to provide a celebration of the winter season and the cycle of nature in a nonsectarian, noncommercial way," says program organizer and Bard alumna Sheila Moloney, class of 1984. Juvenalia, the ancient Roman holiday that followed the celebration of Saturnalia, was devoted to honoring children and to celebrating the rebirth and renewal of light and nature. On this day children were entertained and feted. The program at Bard seeks to replicate this day with a live music performance for children.

Dan Zanes, who is the featured performer with his group, The Rocket Ship Revue, was the former lead singer and songwriter for the roots-rock band, The Del Fuegos. The Rocket Ship Revue will perform rollicking handmade music for kids and kid sympathizers, with updated traditional American folk songs, dance classics, sing-a-long rhyming songs, and a number of original tunes. "I'm excited by a sound that has the raw spontaneity of early rock and roll, the handmade traditions of American folk, and the breezy soul of certain West Indian music," says Zane. Rolling Stone describes his music as "wry, rootsy, real American folk music-songs that twist a little plangency into the sweetness of a melody, songs that feel like life."

The Rocket Ship Revue has played throughout the New York and New England area and will soon be traveling to Chicago and Los Angeles. They have made several television appearances including the CBS Saturday Early Show, and have been interviewed on National Public Radio's Todd Mundt Show and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. Articles about the group have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, People, New York, and Rolling Stone. Their first CD, Rocket Ship Beach, was released in 1999 to critical acclaim.

The program is sponsored in conjunction with the Bard-St. Stephen's Alumni/ae Association of Bard College. Admission is $6 per person. For further information, call Moloney at 845-876-7726.
